Scoliosis.... what is it?

My back wearing a sundress, 41 years oldScoliosis is a curve in the spine. My spine goes to the side in about a 77o backwards–C curve and then forward 10o (lordosis). It is not a pretty site. Invariably the clothes I want to wear the most showcase the deformity the best... making being a clothes horse very frustrating. As the picture to the right reveals, I could not wear what I wanted to wear.

An excellent place to gain an understanding of the many types of scoliosis is the website. It contains several scoliosis case presentations, where you can see what has happened to the body due to scoliosis, and the results after treatment. It may not look like it, but I did get treatment.

As I update this website, the spring of 2006, I am 55 years old. I can tell you that living in a crooked body is a daily battle, and one I would never have been able to wage emotionally alone. The picture above was taken when I was 41 years old.

There is an online organization based in the United Kingdom which offers emotional support and friendship to others with scoliosis. On that website, you can get to know many who have to contend with scoliosis, and everything in life that goes along with it.
